"SERVICE TO MANKIND IS SERVICE TO GOD"

INTRODUCTION

Mirzapur is a small town of 300000 people on the bank of the Ganges in eastern U.P. It is also the seat of the administrative headquarters of Mirzapur District and Vindhyachal Divison and hence, over a million people look up to the town for their health and educational requirements. Till the nineteenth century, Mirzapur used to be an important trade-center and river-port during the British Raj. At different points of time, it has been known for the production of shellac, woolen carpets and brass utensils. But dwindling fortunes of trade and industry have not been very kind for the prosperity of the town.

HISTORY

In light of unreliable government healthcare services, some philanthropic citizens felt a need of providing dependable quality of medical facilities to the needy at nominal cost. A group of like-minded friends led by our Founder President came together and decided to do something to overcome this situation. Being a spiritual man, he had visited several ashrams and centers of Ramakrishna Mission.  Inspired by the spirit of service at various Ramakrishna Mission Centers, the founders therefore decided to adopt the motto ‘ Nar Sewa – Narayan Sewa ’ i.e. service to mankind is service to God ; the clarion call of Swami Vivekanand who realized that each human being is a reflection of God and strived to serve God in the form of man. They decided to establish a hospital and call it Ramakrishna Sewashram.

Thus Ramakrishna Sewashram was conceived and a parcel of land was acquired from a defunct Gaushala. Construction was started after a ceremonial Bhoomi-Poojan by Shri Raj Nath Singh, the then Chief Minister of U.P. in the year 2000 and Out-Patient service was inaugurated on Vivekanand Jayanti, January 12, 2002; by Hon’ble Justice Palok Basu of Allahabad High Court.

MISSION

Some important policy guidelines that are being followed since inception are:

  • The main objective is to make decent medical service available at Mirzapur at low cost so that even the poor would not be denied treatment.
  • The hospital is to be run by a charitable trust on a non-profit basis.
  • No government grants are taken.
  • The hospital would depend upon donations for major capital expenses and investments.
  • The aim is to provide not only medical treatment but also surgical treatments in various departments so that people are not compelled to move to higher centers of treatment in bigger cities, that entails heavy expenses.
  • Different departments would be developed in due course of time where a patient could be attended and primary treatment be given before referring a patient to bigger centers, if expressly needed.
  • Organize free medical camps in remote villages where visiting medical team would examine patients and distribute medicines and refer them to hospitals if so required.

Objective

The main objective of the hospital is to provide decent medical and surgical facilities available to the citizens. While there is a 3-tiered structure of charges, the hospital is run on a non-profit basis.
